Wine Cruise on the Rhine

Basel → Amsterdam

8 Days

This exclusive wine cruise on the Rhine & Moselle offers a discovery tour to the most beautiful wineries in Germany and Alsace while cruising from Basel to Amsterdam! All excursions will take place under professional guidance, to introduce you to the processes of winegrowing. Immerse yourself in worlds of pleasure, get to know the secrets of winemaking during talks with experienced winemakers and let floral, aromatic or peachy smells pervade your senses in exclusive tastings.

We wish you a warm welcome to your exclusive Rhine Wine Cruise! The trip begins in Basel, Switzerland’s third largest city, with embarkation in the afternoon. After getting familiar with your floating hotel, enjoy a welcome wine toast while your ship heads for Strasbourg. This evening, savour a delicious welcome dinner prepared by our chef and his staff.

Departure 5pm

During breakfast, arrive in romantic Strasbourg located on the northeast border of France. If you like, visit the beautiful old city during an optional extended morning tour. After lunch, visit a wine cellar in a typical Alsatian vineyard, where the first tasting of classical wines takes place. Late in the evening, your AMADEUS-ship leaves France and heads for Germany.

The Alsace region is truly blessed with enviable growing conditions: ancient soils, noble grapes and an extraordinary climate – one of the driest in France. Over 90% of Alsace wines are made from white grape varieties - Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Gewurztraminer, with Pinot Noir being the only type of red. Aromatic and balanced with impressive acidity and structure, these wines are remarkably food friendly. The producers in Alsace do not use oak aging to add spice and richness. Instead, they rely on a balance of ripeness and alcohol to fill out the flavour. Alsatian wines are all about aromas, floral and peachy smells pervading your senses.

At night, cross the border to Germany and arrive in Speyer early in the morning. This morning you have the option to explore the Rhineland-Palatinate city, during a guided optional walking tour or on your own. After lunch, our wine exploration continues with a visit to a wine cellar close to Worms. The region can trace its wine-growing history back almost 2000 years. Here you will have a tasting of the special wines of the region, before you return to the vessel for dinner.

Parallel with Alsace on the other side of the Rhine, the Baden region is Germany's third largest wine region and also boasts the warmest climate. Baden’s diversity is so pronounced, in fact, that the region has been subdivided into districts. Within these districts, winegrowers plant many types of grapes on different soils. The region is nicknamed “Pinot country”, as more than half of the wine produced here is a type of Pinot - Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Spätburgunder is considered the best of the best as far as German red wines are concerned.

Just before breakfast your ship docks in Rüdesheim, well known for its excellent wines. This morning, enjoy an excursion to a wine cellar close to Rüdesheim. Learn about local varieties in a classical Rheingau-Riesling vineyard, before returning to the ship for lunch.

Wine-growing has a long tradition in Rüdesheim and has established the town's reputation as producer of acclaimed Riesling and Pinot Noir wines. The Rheingau area offers the perfect climate, no other winegrowing region in the world having such a high proportion of Riesling, that is 84%. Silvaner is another, fairly neutral, but very old grape variety; it was Germany's most planted until the 1960s, after that having continued to lose ground. It has however remained popular in Franconia and Rheinhessen, where it is grown on chalky soils to produce powerful dry wines with a slightly earthy and rustic, but also food-friendly character.

Continue to Koblenz, one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful cities. This afternoon, don’t miss the optional walking tour to discover the old town of Koblenz. Stroll through the romantic narrow streets with picturesque courtyards and small, cosy squares where numerous cafés invite you to come and sit for a while. Your ship remains in Koblenz overnight.

No wine cruise on the Rhine is complete without a trip to the Mosel region! This morning, enjoy lovely scenery as the vessel cruises the Mosel, before arriving in the romantic little winemaking town of Cochem. Our journey continues as we venture out to taste the typical regional wines of Mosel valley, which have an excellent reputation all over the world.

“Mosel is the white version of Bordeaux,” a third-generation winemaker, Nik Weis, says. “Mosel needs time to age. Great wine is emotionally moving and has lots of complexity given by sweetness. Sugar is like salt in soup. Natural residual sugar is key to making great wines.” The Riesling grape dominates the Mosel region, whose steep slate slopes are ideal for its cultivation. No wires are used here, which makes the vines easier to prune and gives the grapes maximum sun exposure, while the dense planting results in more concentrated fruits and powerful, fruity wines.

The crowning event of the evening is an exclusive wine dinner on board featuring Germany’s best grape varieties while your AMADEUS-ship continues further downstream to Cologne.
